raised in Japan, North America, or Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Japan, trust is largely\u00a0<strong>ascription-based<\/strong> (Trompenaars), or <strong>relationship-based<\/strong> (Meyer). Your company, department, title, and seniority speak for you. Modesty (\u8b19\u865a) is a professional strength, and individual achievements and\u00a0<strong>credibility<\/strong>\u00a0are understood through the organization you represent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my workshops, Japanese participants often introduce themselves by saying how long they\u2019ve been with their company. I still remember one participant\u2014let\u2019s call him&nbsp;<em>Mr. Y<\/em>\u2014who said he\u2019d been with the same pharmaceutical company for 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, I was younger and hadn\u2019t fully absorbed Trompenaars\u2019 insights. My first (very Western) reaction was:&nbsp;<em>\u201cWhy haven\u2019t you moved on?\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;To me, that length of service signaled stagnation, not success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was wrong (and, alas dear reader, not for the last time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many Western cultures, trust is&nbsp;<strong>achievement-based<\/strong> (Trompenaars) \/ <strong>result-based<\/strong> (Meyers). His pitch goes like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m Mike Wiston. I\u2019m the CEO and Founder of mowMedia and mowPod. We\u2019re the largest podcast marketing company in the US, Canada, and the UK. I\u2019m also the co-founder of the Friday Night Karaoke Facebook group with 50,000 members and host of the Friday Night Karaoke podcast, which has been a top-20 Apple podcast for the past two and a half years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s short. It\u2019s clear. It\u2019s full of achievements. And it made an impact (Thanks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mikewiston\/\">Mike<\/a>!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many Japanese professionals, though, it could sound boastful.<br>And it\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>this difference in introductions<\/strong>&nbsp;that often marks the beginning of friction in new business relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japanese professionals aren\u2019t lacking confidence or language ability\u2014they\u2019re operating within a different trust system. But in global environments\u2014meetings, conferences, client interactions\u2014waiting to be asked or relying on title alone can mean being overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Western professionals operating in Japan, the opposite can be true. Leading with personal achievements instead of company, team, or length of service can make you appear aggressive\u2014or even arrogant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, like a coin, there are two sides to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Japanese professionals operating globally:<\/strong><br>An elevator pitch isn\u2019t about abandoning Japanese values. It\u2019s about\u00a0adding <strong>cultural agility<\/strong>.<br>In achievement-based cultures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Individual contribution is currency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time is limited<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct communication is expected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modesty can be misread as uncertainty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Western professionals operating in Japan:<\/strong><br>An introduction is&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;the time to showcase personal accomplishments. It\u2019s about group harmony, context, and modesty. In ascription-based cultures, credibility comes from affiliation and role\u2014not self-promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most effective global professionals don\u2019t replace one style with another\u2014they build&nbsp;<strong>both<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final<em> thoughts&#8230;&#8221;When in Rome do as the Romans do&#8230;&#8221;<br><\/em><\/strong>Your&nbsp;<em>meishi<\/em>&nbsp;still matters.
